GDC Zanskar celebrates World Book Day

The Central Library and Debate/Seminar Committee of Government Degree College (GDC) Zanskar organized a daylong event to celebrate World Book Day on April 26.

The event commenced with a tribute to the innocent lives lost in the recent terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area of Kashmir, followed by a two-minute silence in their memory.

Mohd Ali Khan, Librarian of the college highlighted the importance and objectives of observing World Book Day. While the day is globally celebrated on April 23, Zanskar postponed it to April 26 due to inclement weather.

Faculty members and students actively participated in the event, where two book reviews were presented to mark the occasion.

Dr. Jamphel Sheyan, Assistant Professor of English, presented a detailed review of Voice for the Voiceless by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, focusing on his extraordinary life journey—from the loss of his homeland to rebuilding a life in exile. Dr. Jamphel also provided historical context about Tibet through a PowerPoint presentation.

Dr. Dorjay Namgyail, Assistant Professor of Sociology, reviewed The Discovery of India by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He described the book as a profound exploration of India’s culture, history, philosophy, and identity, highlighting the nation’s unity and resilience amidst its diversity.

Mohd Ishaq, Principal of GDC Zanskar urged students to cultivate the habit of reading books, stressing its importance in today’s era of digital information. He encouraged them to read beyond their academic syllabi to broaden their thinking and imagination.
