Ladakh’s Scientific Ascent: Secretary Amit Sharma Guides UT’s Innovation Odyssey at India International Science Festival 2023

Amit Sharma, the Administrative Secretary of Science and Technology in the Union Territory of Ladakh, participated in the India International Science Festival 2023 held in Faridabad, Haryana (NCR Delhi) on January 19. The four-day event brought together notable figures from various parts of the country and attracted participants from over 20 countries, including Argentina, South Africa, Singapore, Australia, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Indonesia, and more. The objective was to discuss critical issues shaping the global scientific landscape and formulate strategies for the future.

Tsering Angchuk, Deputy Chairman of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, also attended the festival.

During a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Satish K. Agnihotri, an alumnus of IIT Mumbai, Secretary S&T Ladakh, Amit Sharma actively contributed to discussions on strengthening Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) ecosystems in different states/Union Territories across the nation. Delegates from Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Jharkhand shared their insights.

Amit Sharma emphasized the strategic importance of fostering innovation in Ladakh by establishing a Bio-Technology Park and developing a mechanism for start-ups in aromatic plants. He presented a vision aligned with Ladakh’s unique ecosystem, highlighting the region’s potential for sustainable development.

Amit Sharma, along with the Deputy Chairman of LAHDC, Leh, addressed international delegates, showcasing Ladakh’s leadership in carbon neutrality and the upcoming launch of hydrogen-fuel buses—a pioneering initiative that received a standing ovation from the visiting international guests.

Discussions encompassed key aspects such as carbon neutrality, the establishment of biotech parks, promotion of biotechnology start-ups, and seeking support from RCB (Regional Centre for Biotechnology). Amit Sharma underscored UT Ladakh’s commitment to positioning itself as a hub for scientific and technological advancements.

UT Ladakh’s participation in the India International Science Conference 2023, under the leadership of Secretary Amit Sharma, not only signifies a dedication to scientific progress but also highlights Ladakh’s commitment to sustainable and innovative solutions. As Ladakh strides towards a future defined by technological excellence, Amit Sharma’s leadership serves as a guiding beacon.
